SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior pitcher Jason Pizzoferrato (Windsor, CT) won his seventh game without a loss and sophomore first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI as third-seeded Western New England College posted an 11-2 victory over sixth-seeded Salve Regina in the first round of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Baseball Tournament Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 30) at Trelease Park.
This was the sixth consecutive victory for the Golden Bears (28-11) who will meet second-seeded Curry at 3:00 p.m. Thursday (May 1) in Milton, Massachusetts in a winners' bracket contest. The Colonels defeated seventh-seeded Colby-Sawyer 9-8 in 15 innings.
Pizzoferrato allowed three runs (two earned) with six hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks in gaining his 20th career win.
Playing at home for only the second time in its last nine games, WNEC reached double figures in runs and hits for the 11th time this season.
Senior shortstop Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT) collected three of the team's 16 hits, scored twice, and knocked in a run. Kravontka reached the 200-hit plateau in his last game at New England College and now has 203 career hits (second on the school list).
Senior designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) added a pair of doubles with two RBI and three runs while freshman third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) had a pair of run-scoring singles.
Western New England College took a 1-0 lead in the first before scoring three runs in the third and four in the fourth for an 8-0 lead. The Golden Bears tacked on two more runs in the fifth for a 10-0 advantage.
Salve Regina finally got on the board in the sixth and tallied four runs in the seventh with a bases clearing double by junior centerfielder/rightfielder Justin Collett (South Portland, ME) (2-for-4) the big hit of the inning.
The Seahawks finished with 11 hits with senior second baseman Adam Gingras (North Attleboro, MA) (3-for-5, 2 runs) and junior designated hitter Will Pearce (New Fairfield, CT) (3-for-3, RBI) also having multi-hit games.
SRU (21-18-1) will host Colby-Sawyer (14-21) at 3:00 p.m. Thursday in the double elimination tournament.
