SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - It's now a dozen straight wins for the Western New England College baseball team after a 4-3, 14-2 doubleheader sweep over visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon (Apr. 5) at Trelease Park.
The Golden Bears have a 12-5 record and remain unbeaten in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a 6-0 mark.
WNEC won the opener by scoring an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior center-fielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) had a single and scored twice, including the game-winner.
Senior shortstop Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT), senior designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA), and sophomore catcher Jon Dominik (West Springfield, MA) all had RBI singles.
Junior pitcher Jason Pizzoferrato (Windsor, CT) went to 3-0 with a complete game performance allowing six hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts and a walk.
Western New England College broke the second game open early by scoring three runs in the first, and five times in both the second and third innings.
Schwamb (who played first base) and sophomore second baseman Justin Walz (Groton, CT) each went 2-for-2 with a RBI and three runs while sophomore third baseman Nick Martino (Glastonbury, CT) and sophomore designated hitter Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) both added two hits and a pair of RBI.
Griglun, who also had a hit in the opener, extended his hitting streak to 17 contests.
Senior pitcher Brian Shimansky (West Caldwell, NJ) went five innings to gain his second win in three decisions.
Wentworth junior rightfielder Phil Costello (Medford, MA) went 3-for-3 in the twinbill.
The Leopards fall to 14-7 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
