NEWPORT, R.I. - The Western New England College baseball team saw a couple of streaks come to an end after splitting a doubleheader against Salve Regina on Sunday (Apr. 6).
The Seahawks captured the opener 8-5, which snapped the Golden Bears' 12-game winning streak. Sophomore designated hitter Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) also had his 17-game hitting streak ended after going 0-3 with a sacrifice fly.
WNEC scored three runs in the first, but committed four errors in the game, which led to four unearned runs. Salve Regina scored three times in the sixth to break a 5-5 tie.
Senior pitcher Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) suffered his second loss in four decisions.
WNEC took the second contest 3-0 behind junior pitcher Bryan Calzone (Bethel, CT) who fired a three-hit shutout with three strikeouts and three walks.
Senior shortstop Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT) had a RBI single in the first and the Golden Bears pushed across two unearned runs in the seventh.
Griglun bounced back with two hits while junior left-fielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) also had a pair of hits and a stolen base.
Western New England College is now 13-6 overall and 7-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).
Salve Regina has a 12-10 record, including a 2-6 conference mark.
