Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - In another exciting match between two city rivals, the Western New England College men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie against host Springfield at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex Saturday afternoon (Sept. 6).
The Golden Bears (1-1-1) took a 1-0 lead when senior Dan Hare (Staatsburg, NY) fired home a corner kick for his second goal of the season in the 20th minute.
WNEC kept the Pride off the board for more than 68 minutes until senior Matt Montgomery (Colchester, CT) knotted the score with an assist from junior John Plourd (Southampton, MA) with just 2:04 left in regulation.
Western New England College had a couple of decent scoring opportunity in overtime.
Senior Dale Totman (Conway, MA) had a shot that just missed to the right at the 5:49 mark of the first extra session. Hare had a shot attempt go to the right with 4:35 remaining in the second overtime period.
Springfield, which was making its seasion debut, missed a scoring attempt when senior Myles Tilton (Plymouth, MA) had a direct kick go over the top of the goal with 47 seconds left in the match.
WNEC sophomore goalkeeper Dan Ruscigno (Wappingers Falls, NY) finished with three saves while junior Kevin Leahy (Cheshire, CT) stooped five shots for the Pride.
Springfield held a 12-10 advantage in shots while Western New England College held an 10-8 margin in corner kicks.
