SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore designated hitter Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) and sophomore second baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) combined for nine hits and 14 runs-batted-in as the Western New England College baseball team defeated visiting New England College by the scores of 15-1 and 13-3 Wednesday (Mach 25) at Trelease Park.
The Golden Bears improved their record to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The pilgrims fall to 3-5 and 0-2 in the league.
Fatse had a triple, run, and three RBI in the opener along with a triple, two singles, five RBI, and a run in the second contest.
Trubia had two doubles, a single, a run, and four RBI in the first game and added a single, double, two runs, and two RBI in the second contest.
Senior centerfielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) knocked in four runs with a single, double, and triple, and scored twice in the opener. He also had a single, double, three RBI, and a pair of runs in the second game.
Seniors Jason Pizzoferrato (Windsor, CT) and Bryan Calzone (Bethel, CT) were the winning pitchers as both improved their records to 2-1.
New England College sophomore catcher Jimmy Lauzon (Manchester, NH) had a big day going 3-for-3 with a RBI in the first game while contributing a single and run in the second contest,
Junior third baseman Jimmy Hoyt (Rochester, NH) and freshman rightfielder Lucas Burgess (Bath, NH) each had two singles in the second game.
