Big fourth inning leads Rensselaer past Western New England College

TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute baseball team scored eight runs in the fourth inning in posting a 13-4 victory over visiting Western New England College in a non-league game in the rain Thursday (March 26) at Robison Field.

The Golden Bears fall to 8-5 while the Red Hawks improve to 10-4 following their ninth consecutive victory.

Junior first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) had a 3-for-3 performance (all singles) for WNEC while junior shortstop Justin Walz (Groton, CT) went 2-for-4 with a run-batted-in.

Senior centerfielder Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY) led the hosts with a triple, two singles, two runs scored, and a pair of RBI in five trips to the plate.

Junior designated hitter Scott Robinson (Schenectady, NY) went 1-for-3 with four RBI, including a three-homer that gave RPI a 3-0 lead in the second.

Junior Ryan Washburn (Gansevoort, NY) went five innings allowing four hits with five strikeouts, one walk, and one unearned run for his third win in five decisions.

Western New England College used six pitchers with sophomore Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, CT) (1-1) taking the loss.
