SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior Matt Rogers (Portsmouth, RI) tossed a four-hitter for his first college shutout as the Western New England College baseball team blanked visiting Curry 13-0 Saturday afternoon (March 28) at Trelease Park.
The Colonels earned a split in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) doubleheader by rallying for a 6-3 win in eight innings in the second contest.
Rogers, a righthander, dominated the visitors who came to town with an impressive .405 team batting average. He scattered four hits with a walk and two strikeouts in moving his record to 2-1 while ending Curry's nine-game winning streak.
Freshman desigmnated hitter Matt Fleishman (East Northport, NY) paced the 16-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and five runs-batted-in.
Sophomore second baseman Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) contributed a pair of singles and walks along with two RBI, four runs scored, and a stolen base.
Sophomore third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) chipped-in with two singles, a walk, and three runs scored.
In the second game, Curry scored a run in the seventh to tie the game and tallied three times in the eighth for the deciding runs.
Junior centerfielder Jesse Bruinsma (Lynnfield, MA) keyed the win with three hits, including a RBI double that tied the game and a RBI single in the eighth.
Junior leftfielder Tim Sweeney (Walpole, MA) had a pair of singles with two RBI. Senior rightfielder James Geosits (Wyomissing, PA) slugged a pair of doubles and scored twice.
Fatse had a single, run, and a sacrifice fly that gave him a team high 34 RBI in 15 games.
Western New England College has a 9-6 record and 4-2 mark in the conference. Curry is 15-3 and 9-1.
