WENHAM, Mass. - The Western New England College baseball team split a doubleheader with Gordon taking the opener 17-0 before dropping a 6-1 decision in the second contest Wednesday afternoon (April 1).
The Golden Bears pounded out 21 hits in the first game, but managed only three in the second outing in watching their record slip to 12-8 overall and 6-4 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).
Sophomore third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) had four hits, including a grand slam homer as WNEC opened the afternoon with a 10-run first inning. He added two doubles along with two runs scored, and six runs-batted-in.
Sophomore second baseman Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) also collected four hits with two runs scored and three RBI.
Junior rightfielder Steve Kearney (Glastonbury, CT) enjoyed his best day of the season with three hits, two runs scored, and a RBI.
Senior leftfielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) and freshman first baseman Mike Taylor (Andover, MA) each added two hits.
Gordon junior pitcher Stephen Kefalas (Wenham, MA) shut down the Golden Bears in the nightcap striking out five and walking two. He also had a RBI double and scored a run.
Junior right-fielder Aaron Whittet (Rye, NH) led the 12-hit attack with a pair of doubles with a run scored and RBI.
This was the first conference victory in six starts for the Fighting Scots who are now 2-11 overall.
Western New England College's only run came in the seventh when Trubia singled and later scored on a RBI ground-out by Beck.
