Box Score NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton took advantage of three unearned runs for a 7-4 victory over visiting Western New England College in a non-league baseball game Friday afternoon (April 10) at Sidell Stadium.
The Lyons, who are fourth nationally among Division III teams, improved their record to 23-3 while the Golden Bears fall to 16-10 after having their four-game win streak come to an end.
WNEC out-hit the hosts by a 12-11 margin with sophomore rightfielder Tom Bouvier (East Longmeadow, MA) knocking in three runs runs with a double and two-run single.
Sophomore second baseman Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) had a pair of singles and RBI while freshman designated hitter Matt Fleishman (East Northport, NY) had a single and double with a run scored.
Senior leftfielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) and junior first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) also had two hits.
Western New England College took a 2-0 lead in the first when junior shortstop Justin Walz (Groton, CT) tripled and scored on a double by Bouvier. Fatse then drove in Bouvier with a two-out single.
Wheaton tied the game with two runs in the second and added a pair of unearned runs in the third before scoring two runs (one unearned) inthe fourth for a 6-2 advantage.
The Golden Bears got within two when Bouvier delivered a two-run single to make the score 6-4 in the eighth, but the Lyons countered with a run in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring.
Junior leftfielder Paul Malaguti (Amdover, MA) had three hits, a run, and RBI for the Lyons. Freshman rightfielder Hal Landers (Salem, NH) contributed a single, triple, run, and RBI.
Sophomore Kevin Calabro (Andover, MA) (3-1) was the winning pitcher in relief while senior Jason Pizzoferrato (Windsor, CT) (3-3) took the loss.
