Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - In a battle of regional powers, Suffolk posted a 6-3 victory over host Western New England College in a non-league baseball game Wednesday afternoon (April 15) at Trelease Park.
The Rams, who are ranked sixth in the New England Division III Coaches Poll, upped their record to 22-5. The Golden Bears, who are tied for eighth, drop to 19-11.
Suffolk started strong scoring a pair of runs in the first and three in the third for an early 5-0 lead. WNEC scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh frames before the Rams tallied the last run of the game in the ninth.
Senior centerfielder Keith Carter (Newburyport, MA) had two singles, a double, two runs scored, and a run-batted-in for the visitors.
Sophomore designated hitter Jon Handy (South Burlington, VT) added a single, double, run scored and two RBI. Junior third baseman Mike Kennealy (Georgetown, MA) contributed a pair of singles and two RBI.
The Golden Bears finished with eight hits as senior leftfielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) had a single, double, and RBI while senior centerfielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) had two singles and a run scored.
Sophomore third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) and freshman catcher Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) each belted a double and scored a run.
Junior Marc Doyle (Whitman, MA) was the winning pitcher while senior Tim Doyle (Milton, MA) gained the save.
Junior Matt Rogers (Portsmouth, RI) (2-2) took the loss.
