BRISTOL, R.I. - Sophomore second baseman Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) had three hits, including two doubles and two runs-batted-in to lead the Western New England College baseball team to a 10-7 victory over host Roger Williams in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon (April 18) at Paolino Field.
The Hawks won the opener 3-1 behind the five-hit pitching of senior Brian Hurld (South Boston, MA).
The Golden Bears earned the split in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) twinbill after banging out 11 hits with junior first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) collecting a pair of doubles, one RBI and two runs scored.
Junior shortstop Justin Walz (Groton, CT) singled twice, scored two runs, knocked in a run, and stole a base. He also had a single and stolen base in the first game.
Senior leftfielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) also had a pair of hits along with two runs and a RBI.
Senior centerfielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) didn't get a hit, but reached on an error and fielders' choice and stole three bases with a RBI and run scored.
Freshman Mike Lawlor (Windsor, CT) pitched four innings in relief giving up four runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks for his first college victory in two decisions.
Freshman Paul Dougan (Manchester, CT) gor the final one with runners on second and third for hisfirst college save.
In the opener, WNEC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Griglun belted a double to score sophomore rightfielder Tom Bouvier (East Longmeadow, MA) who singled with one out.
Hurld (5-1) gave up only three hits the rest of way finishing with five strikeouts and two walks.
The Hawks plated all their runs in the second inning with junior shortstop Grant Bolin (Simsbury, CT) knocking in two runs with a double. He also homered in the nightcap.
Western New England College now has a 21-11 record, including a 12-6 mark in the conference.
Roger Williams is 14-14-1 overall and 9-6-1 in the league.
