Andrew Fatse sets single season RBI mark
PAXTON, Mass. – The Western New England College baseball team clinched second place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) after sweeping host Anna Maria 6-2 and 16-2 Saturday (April 25) at Alumni Field.
The Golden Bears, who will host a first-round playoff game on Tuesday, end the regular season with a 25-14 record and 16-6 mark in the conference.
In the opener, freshman pitcher Mark DiTommaso (Hebron, CT) improved his record to 6-0 with a six-hit complete game. He allowed six hits, walked one, and fanned five.
WNEC scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to bounce back from a 2-1 deficit.
Sophomore third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) had a pair of singles and two runs-batted-in.
Junior first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) had two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Senior leftfielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) contributed a pair of hits and two stolen bases.
Junior designated hitter Jeff Lander (Gloucester, MA) had two his, including a homer that gave the hosts a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
In the second game, sophomore second baseman Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) had two doubles, a homer, and knocked in five runs to set a school single season record with 59 RBI (breaking the old mark of 55 established by Travis Schwamb last year).
Senior centerfielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) had a single, double, triple, and four RBI.
Junior right fielder Steve Kearney (Glastonbury, CT) also had three hits, scored three times, and had two RBI. He also doubled in the opener.
Freshman designated hitter Matt Fleishman (East Northport, NY) added two singles and scored a pair of runs with a RBI.
Trubia also belted a home run and scored three runs.
Junior Matt Rogers (Portsmouth, RI) went the first five innings giving up five hits and two runs with a strikeout. He is now 4-3 this spring.
For the AMCATS, junior first baseman James McNamara (Worcester, MA) had two hits and a run while sophomore catcher Jeff Kodys (Paxton, MA) contributed a pair of hits and an RBI.
Western New England College finished with 25 hits for the day in raising its team batting average to .354.
Anna Maria falls to 12-27-1 and 8-14 in the conference.
