BEVERLY, Mass. - Freshman designated hitter Matt Fleishman (East Northport, NY) slugged the first three homers on his college career to lead the Western New England College baseball team to a 12-0, 15-2 sweep of host Endicott at North Field Sunday afternoon (April 5).
This was the fourth doubleheader in seven days for the Golden Bears who capped a busy week by winning six of nine games.
WNEC totaled 28 hits (including five homers and nine doubles) and had an eight-run sixth inning in the first game and nine-run sixth-inning in the nightcap to improved its record to 15-9. The Golden Bears are 9-5 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).
Fleishman doubled, homered, knocked in four runs, and scored twice in the opener. He belted a pair of round trippers (good for three RBI) in the nine-run, sixth inning in the nightcap.
Sophomore third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) also enjoyed a great day at the plate with five hits, including a homer and two doubles in the second contest. He compiled five RBI and scored four runs in the two games.
Senior centerfielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) had four hits (three doubles) and senior leftfielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, MA) had his first homer of the season in the opener and four hits in the doubleheader.
Junior shortstop Justin Walz (Groton, CT) crossed the plate five times during the day.
Western New England College also received a pair of strong pitching performances from sophomore Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, CT) and freshman Mark DiTommaso (Hebron, CT).
Michaud (3-1) fired a five-hitter for his first shutout of the season after walking three and striking out five.
DiTommaso (4-0) gave up two runs on five hits in six innings with a walk and two strikeouts.
Endicott junior first baseman Andrew Betts (Bristol, CT) and junior centerfielder Aaron Santos (Cambridge, MA) each had three hits in the twinbill.
The Gulls fall to 7-13 overall and 2-6 in the league.
