Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. - No. 10 Tufts broke open a close game with seven straight goals, including five to end the first half, in posting a 15-4 victory over No. 9 Western New England College Tuesday night (April 7) at Bello Field.
The Jumbos, who bounced back from their first loss at Trinity (11-9) last Saturday, improved their record to 9-1.
The Golden Bears had their six-game win streak snapped in dropping to 6-2.
Sophomore D.J. Hessler (Monkton, MD) scored five goals with three assists to lead the hosts. Senior goalie Matt Harrigan (Darnestown, MD) compiled a season best 15 saves.
Hessler scored twice in the first 90 seconds of the game, then added a third goal with 29 seconds remaining in the first period to give Tufts a 4-1 lead.
WNEC used two straight goals by senior Brody Savoie (Wilbraham, MA) at 8:18 in the second quarter and junior Tim Santye (Skillman, NJ) to get within 4-3 with 5:36 left before intermission.
Tufts netted five goals in the final 3:41 for a 9-3 advantage at the half and added a pair of goals in the third quarter while holding the Golden Bears scoreless for an 11-3 margin.
The Jumbos held a slight 47-44 edge in shots, but won 14-of-23 face-offs.
Senior Chuck Cartelli (Yorktown Heights, NY) and freshman Patrick White (Milton, MA) had the other goals for Western New England College. Savoie and freshman Nick Jez (Somers, CT) each had an assist.
Freshman goalie Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) finished with 15 saves.
