Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. - The Westen New England College baseball team posted one of the biggest wins in school history with a 14-3 victory over top-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University Thursday afternoon (April 9).
Junior first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) smacked a grand slam homer to highlight a seven-run ninth inning. He finished with five runs-batted-in after plating the first run in the first on a fielder's choice.
Junior shortstop Justin Walz (Groton, CT) had three hits, including a double and homer, scored four times, and knocked in a pair of runs.
Senior leftfielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) had a big game with five hits, including a double, RBI, and run scored.
Freshman Matt Fleishman (East Northport, NY) added a single, triple, and two RBI.
Senior lefty Bryan Calzone (Bethel, CT) went the first 6 1/3 innings and allowed no runs and six hits with a walk and strikeout. He is now 4-2 this season.
The Golden Bears improved their record to 16-9 while the Warriors fall to 19-4.
Both the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and d3baseball.com ranked Eastern Connecticut first in its Division III poll this week.
