ONEONTA, N.Y. – Junior Justin Martins (Ludlow, MA) scored in the ninth minute and sophomore Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, NY) added an insurance goal in the 77th minute as the Western New England College men's soccer team defeated Skidmore 2-0 in a opening round match of the Mayor's Cup Tournament Friday afternoon (Sept. 11).

The Golden Bears, ranked 22nd nationally, will meet host Oneonta (a 2-1 winner over Williams Paterson) at 4:00 p.m. Saturday in the championship match.

This was the second goal of the season for Fitzpatrick and first for Martins as WNEC bounced back from a tough 2-1 loss against Wheaton on Wednesday.

Senior Ryan Nugent (Bath, PA) assisted on the opening goal while senior Jay Sabia (Poughkeepsie, NY) earned the assist on the last goal.

Senior goalkeeper Dan Ruscigno (Wappingers Falls, NY) compiled four saves in his first start of the season for the Golden Bears.

Sophomore Nick Peterson (West Hartford, CT) stopped five shots for the Thoroughbreds.

Western New England College improves its record to 3-1 while Skidmore drops to 2-1.
