CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Western New England College baseball team didn't waste any time getting back on the winning track posting a 10-0 seven-inning win over SUNY Brockport Tuesday afternoon (March 16) at the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational.
Freshman pitcher
Kevin Jefferis (Cheshire, CT) tossed a two-hit shutout in his first collegiate start for his first college victory. He struck out seven and allowed only one walk. Jefferis had appeared in two prior games in a relief role.
The Golden Bears, who dropped their first game of the season Monday against Keene State, banged out 14 hits.
Junior catcher
Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) was the hitting star going 3-for-4 with a grand slam homer and a pair of run-scoring singles.
Senior center fielder
Steve Kearney (Glastonbury, CT) and senior shortstop
Justin Walz (Groton, CT) each added three hits and two runs scored. Kearney also walked while Walz contributed a run-batted-in.
Senior first baseman
Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) chipped-in with a pair of singles and RBI.
Western New England College improves its record to 6-1 while the Golden Eagles drop to 5-4.
