Western New England College opens TCCC season with doubleheader split at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Western New England College baseball team opened play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a doubleheader split at Salve Regina on Sunday (March 21). The Seahawks took the opener 8-5 before the Golden Bears came back for a 6-4 win in the second game.

Western New England College is now 8-3 while Salve Regina has a 7-5 mark.

The Golden Bears scored single runs in every inning but the second and seventh in the opener, but the Seahawks used the long ball to score four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Junior designated hitter Ryan Dudzinski (Bristol, CT) had two doubles and a single along with a stolen base, two runs and a run-batted-in for the WNEC. Senior shortstop Justin Walz (Groton, CT) added a pair of hits and run. Freshman Kevin Jefferis (Cheshire, CT) took the loss.

SRU junior shortstop Alexander Melcher (Poughkeepsie, NY) belted a two-run homer in the fourth and sophomore first base player Michael O'Neill (Pawtucket, RI) smacked a three-run homer in the fifth. Both players also singled and scored twice.

In the next game, junior third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) gave the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run triple. 

The Seahawks tied it in the bottom half of the inning before Western New England College moved ahead 6-2 after scoring two more runs in the second, and once in both the third and fourth innings.

Junior second baseman Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) added a single, double, and run. Sophomore right fielder Tom Bouvier (East Longmeadow, MA) contributed a single, triple, and run. Junior catcher Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) also tripled and scored a run.

Sophomore Mark DiTommaso (Hebron, CT) went five innings for his first win of the season while sophomore Mike Lawlor (Windsor, CT) gained the save.

Salve Regina senior catcher Dave Miller (Shelton, MA) knocked in two runs with a single and sacrifice fly while Melcher also had a RBI single. Sophomore center fielder Byron Reding (Darien, CT) singled, walked, and scored two runs.
