Westfield State rallies to hand Western New England College worst loss of season

WESTFIELD, Mass
. - The Westfield State baseball team erupted for 20 hits in posting a 19-5 victory over visiting Western New England College Thursday afternoon (Apr. 22) at Alumni Field.

This was the worst loss of the season for the Golden Bears who are now 27-7 after having their 11-game winning streak snapped. WNEC came into the contest ranked second in New England behind Tufts. The Owls are now 21-7.

Junior second baseman Pete Grillo (Shrewsbury, MA) had three hits and four RBI for the hosts who rallied from a four-run deficit.

Western New England College led 3-1 after two innings and moved ahead 5-1 after scoring twice in the fifth following a two-run single by junior third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT).

Westfield State answered with seven runs in the bottom of the inning and three runs in the sixth for an 11-5 advantage. The Owls put the game out of reach with six runs in the seventh and tacked on two more in the eighth on Grillo's two-run double.

Trubia finished with two runs-batted-in for the Golden Bears while senior shortstop Justin Walz (Groton, CT), junior center fielder Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA), and freshman second baseman Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) each contributed an RBI single.

Junior designated hitter Ryan Dudzinski (Bristol, CT) added two hits, a run, and stole his team-high 24th base of the season.

Freshman catcher Andrew Medeiros (Acushnet, MA) contributed three hits (including a triple) and three RBI for the Owls. 

Senior first baseman Ben Campbell (Easthampton, MA) and senior right fielder/pitcher Jeff Fields (Pittsfield, MA) each chipped-in with three hits as well. Junior left fielder Sean Geary (South Yarmouth, MA) had a pair of singles and three RBI.

The teams used 11 pitchers in the game, including six by the Golden Bears.

Senior Bob Sinpoloi (Wilmington, MA) pitched the first five innings for his fourth win in five decisions.

Junior Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, CT) lasted only 4 2/3 innings in falling to 4-2.
