Seventh-seeded Anna Maria upsets second-seeded WNEC in opening round of conference playoffs

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
- Sophomore right fielder Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, MA) had four hits and freshman pitcher  Ed Maldonado (Worcester, MA) starred in relief as seventh-seeded Anna Maria upset second-seeded Western New England College 11-7 in an opening round game of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Baseball Tournament Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 27) at chilly Trelease Park.

The AMCATS (20-17) will visit third-seeded Endicott (a 6-2 winner over sixth-seeded Eastern Nazarene) in a second-round game of the double elimination tournament on Wednesday (Apr. 28). The Golden Bears (28-9) will host Eastern Nazarene in a losers' bracket contest Wednesday. Both games will begin at 3:00 p.m.

Anna Maria trailed 2-0 before scoring nine runs in the second inning after sending 13 batters to the plate. Scafidi and junior shortstop Mike Galvin (Rutland, MA) each had a pair of singles and scored a run in the inning.

Western New England College staged a comeback by scoring four times in the seventh to get within 10-6 before Maldonado came in to get the final out with two runners on base. He allowed only two hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Junior second baseman Andy Fallon (Worcester, MA) contributed three hits to the visitors' 17-hit attack while scoring two runs and delivering a pair of RBI.

Junior pitcher James McNamara (Worcester, MA) went six innings giving up nine hits and three runs with a pair of strikeouts and walk to even his record at 5-5.

The Golden Bears lashed out 13 hits as junior catcher Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) went 3-for-5 with a double, RBI, and three runs. Junior designated hitter Ryan Dudzinski (Bristol, CT) added a single, double, and scored twice. 

Dudzinski also established a new school record with his 25th stolen base of the season, breaking the old mark of 24 set by Joe Brown (1987), Jeff Mauritis (2004), and Mike Beck (2009).

Senior shortstop Justin Walz (Groton, CT), senior first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT), and junior left fielder Andrew Fatse (Hampden, CT) each chipped-in with two hits.

Junior pitcher Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, CT)  (4-3) took the loss.

Western New England College left 10 runners on base in losing to the AMCATS for the first time in eight decisions.
