Ed Maldonado (Worcester, MA) starred in relief as seventh-seeded Anna Maria upset second-seeded Western New England College 11-7 in an opening round game of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Baseball Tournament Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 27) at chilly Trelease Park.
The AMCATS (20-17) will visit third-seeded Endicott (a 6-2 winner over sixth-seeded Eastern Nazarene) in a second-round game of the double elimination tournament on Wednesday (Apr. 28). The Golden Bears (28-9) will host Eastern Nazarene in a losers' bracket contest Wednesday. Both games will begin at 3:00 p.m.
Anna Maria trailed 2-0 before scoring nine runs in the second inning after sending 13 batters to the plate. Scafidi and junior shortstop
Mike Galvin (Rutland, MA) each had a pair of singles and scored a run in the inning.
Western New England College staged a comeback by scoring four times in the seventh to get within 10-6 before Maldonado came in to get the final out with two runners on base. He allowed only two hits in 2 1/3 innings.
