Western New England claims top spot in CCC after 2-1 win over Eastern Nazarene

QUINCY, Mass. – Senior midfielder Corey Howard (Hopedale, MA) tallied a pair of goals to lead Western New England to a 2-1 victory over Eastern Nazarene in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match on Saturday (Oct. 1) afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
 
The Golden Bears improve to 9-2-1 overall and remain unbeaten at 4-0 in CCC play; the Lions slip to 2-9 with 0-4 mark in conference.
 
ENC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as senior forward Jon Corbin (Fallston, MD) opened the scoring in the 8th minute.
 
Western New England leveled the score at 1-1 as Howard converted on a penalty kick in the 19th minute.
 
After heading to the half deadlocked at 1-1, Howard again connected from the penalty spot in the 51st minute to give WNE a 2-1 advantage that proved to be enough for the win.
 
Both teams attempted 10 shots in the match, with WNE holding an 8-4 edge in shots on target.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Domenick Villano (Bronxville, NY) earned the win in net by making three saves.
 
ENC freshman goalie Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, PA) recorded five saves for the visitors.
 
Western New England returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 4) as they travel to Eastern Connecticut for a 4:00 p.m. non-league match.
