SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior forward Evan Hazelett (Amherst, MA) scored both goals, including the game-winner in the 71st minute, to lead No. 9 Wesleyan to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Western New England in a non-conference men's soccer contest Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 19) at soggy Suprenant Field.

The Cardinals, who are ranked second in New England, remained unbeaten with a 10-0-2 record. The Golden Bears, ranked fourth in the region, are now 13-3-1 after having their seven-match win streak ended.

Western New England had missed a couple of good scoring opportunities early when attempts from senior midfielder Eric Marcelino (Farmington, CT) and sophomore forward Ryan Williams (Brewster, NY) just missed wide left and wide right in the 13th and 15th minutes, respectively.

Hazelett then opened the scoring when he headed in a shot following a long pass from senior defender Harrison Lewin (Chappaqua, NY) in the 20th minute.

The Golden Bears finally broke through in the second half when senior forward John Rusin (Chicopee, MA) fired in a shot with an assist from senior defender Mark Deganis (Cheshire, CT) in the 58th-minute.

That was only the fourth goal Wesleyan has allowed this season and broke a 646 minute, six second scoreless streak. The Cardinals entered the match ranked first nationally among Division III teams in goals-against-average (0.28).

Both sides moved the ball up and down the field without any solid scoring opportunities until Hazelett netted the winning goal (with another assist from Lewin) in the 71st minute.

Western New England's final chance came late in the match when an attempt by sophomore back Kevin Parma (Peconic, NY) sailed just inches over the top of the crossbar with 45 seconds remaining.

Western New England had a slight 12-10 advantage in shots and 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

WNE sophomore goalkeeper Domenick Villano (Bronxville, NY) and Wesleyan junior Adam Purdy (Montclair, NJ) each made two saves.
