SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior attacker Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) scored six goals as the Western New England women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Mount Holyoke 16-8 in the season opener for both squads Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 1).

The Golden Bears also received a fine performance from junior midfielder Katie Toomy (Northborough, MA) who had three goals, three assists, six caused turnovers, and four ground balls.

Senior defender Nicole Poli (Medfield, MA) contributed three goals with an assist, along with a team-high eight caused turnovers and six ground balls.

Freshman midfielder Kelsey Daniels (South Windsor, CT) also netted three goals with an assist in an impressive collegiate debut.

Junior midfielder Liz McRoberts (Bourne, MA) chipped-in with a pair of assists and five ground balls. Senior attacker Nicole Squadrito (Ellington, CT) had the other goal for the Golden Bears while freshman midfielder Shelby Trebbe (Wilbraham, MA) had an assist for her first college point.

Senior goalie Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, NY) compiled five saves.

Western New England took an 8-2 lead at halftime and extended its margin to 12-3 with 19:26 remaining when Barbato netted a pair of goals in an 11-second span with assists from Toomy.

Freshman attacker Liz Randolph (Southbury, CT) led the Lyons with three goals and an assist in a fine varsity debut.

Junior midfielder Hilary Bombard (Northampton, MA) and junior attacker Alex Crean (West Hartford, CT) each scored a pair of goals.

Sophomore midfielder Katya Planson (New Gloucester, ME) tallied the other goal for the visitors. Senior midfielder Vika Planson (New Gloucester, ME) had six ground balls and four draw controls.

Sophomore Jamie Theophilos (Hinsdale, IL) stopped nine shots.

Western New England had a 35-17 advantage in shots and 36-22 edge in ground balls.
