NEWPORT, R.I. - The Western New England baseball team opened play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with an 18-3, 8-1 doubleheader sweep over Salve Regina Sunday afternoon (Mar. 20) at Reynolds Field.
The games originally were scheduled to be played in Springfield, but moved to Rhode Island because of wet field conditions at Trelease Park.
The Golden Bears, three-time defending TCCC champions, improve their record to 6-4. The Seahawks drop to 4-8.
Last year Western New England defeated Salve Regina 8-5 in the TCCC Conference championship game.

Senior pitcher
Zach Croft (Glastonbury, CT) gave up two runs in the first inning, but settled down to gain his first victory of the season. He allowed five hits in five innings with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Th Golden Bears compiled 17 hits with senior third baseman
Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) banging out two singles and a double with three runs and a RBI. Sophomore second baseman
Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) added three singles, four runs, and a run-batted-in. Each player also drew a walk.
Senior designated hitter
Ryan Dudzinski (Bristol, CT) contributed a single, double, run, and four RBI. Senior center fielder
Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) and sophomore shortstop
Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY) each chipped-in with two hits.
Western New England scored six times in both the third and fifth innings.

Matt Capone (East Providence, RI) went 2-for-2 for the Seahawks. Senior shortstop
Andrew Melcher (Poughkeepsie, NY) had a RBI triple in the first inning. Melcher then scored on a run-scoring single by senior first baseman
Tom Glynn (Woodbridge, NY) to give SRU an early lead.

Senior pitcher
Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, CT) was outstanding giving up only three hits and no runs in six innings to notch his first win of the year. He fanned nine and didn't walk a batter.
Sophomore right-fielder
Casey Dadio (Branford, CT) had a three-run double that highlighted a seven-run fifth inning. Junior first baseman
Mike Taylor (Andover, MA) went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and run. Dudzinski also doubled, scored once, and drove in two runs.
Salve Regina scored its only run in the seventh on a pinch-hit single by freshman
Daniel Donahue (Westbury, NY).
