Western New England wins opener then falls to Endicott in second TCCC contest

BEVERLY, Mass.
- The Western New England baseball team split a doubleheader with Endicott Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 30) taking the opener 5-2 before dropping a 3-2 decision at North Field.

The Golden Bears are now 13-5 overall and 9-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference after having their nine-game win streak ended. The Gulls 12-7 and 4-2 in the conference.

Game 1 - Western New England 5, Endicott 2
Senior Matt Rogers (Portsmouth, RI) pitched six strong innings scattering seven hits and allowing both runs (one unearned) with a walk and strikeout. He is now 3-1 this season. Junior Matt Lawlor (Windsor, CT) retired the side without a run in the seventh to earn his second save.

Endicott took a 1-0 lead before the Golden Bears scored twice in the fourth on a RBI single by senior catcher Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) and ground-out by sophomore shortstop Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY).

Senior third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) walloped his first homer of the season with two outs in the fifth before the Gulls countered with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.

Western New England tallied a pair of unearned runs in the sixth with one run coming home on a sacrifice fly by McKelvey.

Endicott finished with nine hits with junior third baseman Danny Mello (Peabody, MA), sophomore second baseman Eric Lemke (Southington, CT), and freshman first baseman Jake Northrup (Boxborough, MA) each collecting two hits. Lemke also scored a run and had a RBI. Sophomore Brendan Pittsley (Plympton, MA) took the loss.

Game 2 - Endicott 3, Western New England 2
Junior Benjamin Petrides (Belchertown, MA) tossed three innings of perfect relief allowing only two hits with a strikeout to gain his first save of the season. Petrides and his former high school teammate sophomore starter Kevin Dupras (Belchertown, MA) combined on a five-hitter. This was the first win of the year for Dupras in three decisions.

The Gulls went ahead 2-0 in the second inning on a two-run double by junior left-fielder Mike Russo (Natick, MA). The Golden Bears immediately tied the contest with a pair of runs in the third on a run-scoring double by sophomore second baseman Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) and a RBI single by Trubia.

Endicott then plated what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the third when Northrup single with two outs to score Mello who had a lead-off walk and move up a base on a ground-out. Junior right-fielder Colin Sitarz (West Hartford, CT) and freshman center-fielder Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, MA) each had two hits.

Senior designated hitter Ryan Dudzinski (Bristol, CT) had a single and double for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Kevin Jefferis (Cheshire, CT) went five innings giving up nine hits and three runs with a walk and no strikeouts in falling to 2-3.
