FARMINGDALE, N.Y.
- Sophomore right-fielder Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) smacked a three-run triple that keyed a seven-run third inning to lead Western New England to an 8-4 victory over Rensselaer Saturday evening (March 5) at the Farmingdale State Baseball Tournament.

Anthonis also singled in three at-bats as the Golden Bears rapped out 10 hits in taking their second straight game in the tournament.

Trailing 3-0, Western New England also benefited from a two-run double by senior third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT), RBI single by sophomore second baseman Mike Rubino (Northford, CT), and run-scoring triple by senior left-fielder Ryan Dudzinski (Bristol, CT) in the decisive third. Rubino and Dudzinski each finished with two hits.

Junior first baseman Mike Taylor (Andover, MA) reached base four times with a double, and three walks, and scored two runs.

Sophomore Kevin Jefferis (Cheshire, CT) allowed four runs (three earned) in six innings while striking out five and walking none. Senior Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, CT) gave up only one hit in two innings before junior Mike Lawlor (Windsor, CT) tossed a scoreless ninth.

Rensselaer also collected 10 hits in its season opener with junior right-fielder Art Levenson (San Diego, CA) going 2-for-4, including a two-run homer that gave the Engineers a 2-0 lead in the second.

Freshman designated hitter Chuck Erickson (Mansfield, MA) and freshman second baseman Andrew Kalish (Clifton Park, NY) each contributed two hits and a RBI in their college debuts. Senior pitcher Mike Cieszko (Stevenson Ranch, CA) took the loss.

Weather permitting, Western New England will meet Keene State at 1:00 p.m. (instead of 4:00) Sunday (March 6) in the final game of the event.
