Western New England wins opener then falls in second contest against Wentworth

- The Western New England baseball team split a doubleheader with Wentworth winning the opener 15-4 before dropping the second game 12-9 Sunday afternoon (Apr. 10) at J. Tec White field on the Gordon College campus.

The Golden Bears are now 22-7 overall and 16-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Leopards have a 15-7 record and are 8-2 in conference play.

Game 1 - Western New England 15, Wentworth 4
Senior Matt Rogers (Portsmouth, RI) won his fifth game of the season in six decisions strong performance. He went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) and four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Golden Bears broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth with four runs following a pair of two-run singles by sophomore left-fielder Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) and sophomore second baseman Mike Rubino (Northford, CT). Both players had three RBI in the game. Anthonis finished with three hits and scored two runs.

Senior designated hitter Ryan Dudzinski (Bristol, CT) helped key the victory by going 3-for-3 with a walk, double, four runs, RBI, and stolen base.

Sophomore shortstop Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY) and junior first baseman Mike Taylor (Andover, MA) also contributed two hits and scored three times apiece. McKelvey also knocked in two runs and Taylor one.

Western New England put the game away with four more runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth.

Game 2 - Wentworth 12, Western New England 9
The Leopards compiled 16 hits and rallied from a 7-4 deficit by scoring twice in both the fourth and fifth innings, and four times in the sixth to end the Golden Bears' nine-game winning streak.

Sophomore left-fielder Alex Wong (Lewiston, ME) had three hits from his ninth spot in the lineup, including a two-run single that gave Wentworth an 8-7 lead in the fifth. Senior center-fielder Matt Jordan (Concord, NH) added a RBI double in the sixth as the Leopards tacked on four unearned runs. He had two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored.

Junior right-fielder Justin Bolla (Groveland, MA) also had three hits with two runs scored and two RBI along with Wong.

Sophomore Ryan DeCotis (Nashua, NH) evened his record at 2-2 with two-and-a-third innings of scoreless relief. He allowed no hits and walked one.

Western New England collected 11 hits, but made two errors that led to five unearned runs and stranded nine runners.

Anthonis had another to-hit game with a double, two walks, two runs and a RBI. Taylor reached base three times following a pair of walks and single. He also had a run and RBI.

Senior center-fielder Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) had two hits and a run-batted-in while senior catcher Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) had a single, double, and run. Junior Mike Lawlor (Windsor, CT) (0-1) took the loss in relief.

Western New England took a 4-0 lead in the first before the Leopards scored three times in their half of the inning. The Golden Bears tallied single runs in the second, third, and fourth.
