MANSFIELD, Conn. - For the second straight day, the Western New England baseball team defeated a nationally-ranked opponent.
Senior third baseman
Tony Trubia (Tolland,CT) and sophomore shortstop
Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY) each homered, and senior
Matt Rogers (Portsmouth, RI) won his seventh game of the season as the Golden Bears posted a 9-4 decision over Little East Conference power Eastern Connecticut Tuesday evening (Apr. 26).
The Warriors (25-6) came into the game fifth in the
Collegiate Baseball Division III and seventh in the d3baseball.com/NCBWA Polls. ECSU also is ranked first in New England.
Western New England (29-8) collected 12 hits with senior center-fielder
Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) and sophomore second baseman
Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) leading the way with three apiece.
Fatse singled and had two doubles while knocking in two runs and scoring once. Rubino also had a double and scored two runs.
Sophomore left-fielder
Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) added a single, double, and run scored while senior catcher
Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) contributed a double and three RBI.
Rogers went the first six innings and gave up six hits and four runs with a walk and four strikeouts. Junior
Mike Lawlor (Windsor, CT) entered the game with Western New England ahead 7-4 and struck out two in an inning-and-a-third to record his sixth save (and second in as many days).
The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second on McKelvey's first career home run and scored six times in the fourth for a 7-0 advantage. Fatse's two-run double, a RBI single by senior designated hitter
Ryan Dudzinski (Bristol, CT), and Leclerc's base clearing double delivered the runs in the pivotal fourth frame. Trubia added a two-run blast in the ninth for the final runs.
Sophomore third baseman
Joe Balowski (Berlin, CT) had a single and double along with a run scored for ECSU. Junior catcher
Steve Cammuso (Rutland, MA) slugged a two-run homer in the fifth to cut the margin to 7-2.
Freshman
Greg Porter (Mystic, CT) lasted only three innings in losing his first collegiate decision.
On Monday, Western New England defeated #21 Wheaton 7-4 in Norton, Massachusetts.
