SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The third-seeded Western New England men's tennis team blanked sixth-seeded Eastern Nazarene 5-0 in a quarterfinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Championship Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 26).
The Golden Bears (14-4) will visit second-seeded Roger Williams at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday (Apr. 27) in a semifinal round match.
Western New England captured all three doubles matches as seniors
Brian Relihan (Orange, CT) and
Mike Jones (Stone Ridge, NY) captured a hard-earned 8-5 decision at number one doubles over sophomore
Austin Steelman (Darlington, MD) and freshman
Brandon Lum (Great Neck, NY).
At number two doubles, sophomore
Chris Holzinger (Foster, RI) and junior
JonPaul Ouellette (Bethlehem, CT) posted an 8-2 victory over freshmen
Tim Luz and
Eric Johnson (Kingston, MA).
Senior
Matt Minahan (Plymouth, MA) and junior
Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, NY) took an 8-3 win over freshman
Nick Thompson (York, PA) and senior
Ryan Robbins (Canyon Country, CA) at the number three flight.
Moving to singles action, Minahan defeated Thompson 6-0, 6-1 at the number five position.
Senior
Tim Santye (Skillman, NJ) then delivered the winning point with a 6-0, 6-4 win over sophomore
Richard Crooks (Collegeville, PA) to end the match via the conference's first to five points wins rule.
The Lions, who ranked among the most teams in the conference, end their campaign with a respectable 10-9 record.
Top-ranked Nichols (15-4) hosts fourth-seeded Endicott (11-7) in the other semifinals match Wednesday.
