SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England baseball team ran its winning streak to eight games after defeating New England College 17-2 and 22-3 Saturday afternoon (Apr. 9) at Trelease Park.
The Golden Bears compiled 33 hits in raising their record to 21-6 overall and 15-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Pilgrims remain winless in the conference at 0-8 after falling to 3-12.
Game 1 - Western New England 17, New England College 2
Sophomore shortstop
Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY) and second baseman
Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) each went 3-for-3 to pace the 18-hit attack. McKelvey also had two doubles. Both players scored twice and knocked in a run.
Senior center-fielder
Andrew Fatse (Hampden, CT) and sophomore left-fielder
Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) also collected three hits apiece with two runs scored. The Golden Bears led 4-2 before scoring 10 runs in the fourth with a two-run double by Anthonis one of several big hits in the inning.
Senior third baseman
Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) singled, doubled, scored twice, and had three RBI. Junior first baseman
Mike Taylor (Andover, MA) had a pair of singles, runs scored, and runs-batted-in.
Senior
Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, CT) (4-0) scattered five hits over five inning and had four strikeouts and only one walk.
New England College senior first baseman
PJ Crowley (Pawcatuck, CT) had a single and RBI triple.
Game 2 - Western New England 22, New England College 3
The Golden Bears again had a big fourth inning scoring a school-record 19 runs after sending 24 batters to the plate. Rubino had two singles and a walk with two runs, and two RBI to cap a perfect 5-for-5 day.
Sophomore right-fielder
Casey Dadio (Branford, CT) also singled twice and knocked in two runs while scoring three times. He batted three times in the fourth after getting both his hits and reaching on a costly error that led to 15 unearned runs.
Freshman shortstop
Jeff Schult (Wappingers Falls, NY) singled, doubled, and walked in a reserve role as coach
Matt LaBranche used 22 players in the contest. Senior catcher
Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) knocked in three runs with a sacrifice fly and two-run single.
Junior
Mark DiTommaso (Hebron, CT) bounced back from a shaky start in his last appearance to toss four scoreless innings allowing just one hit with no walks and four strikeouts. He is now 4-0.
The Pilgrims' managed only four hits and made five errors. Freshman third baseman
Brandon Adorno (Ft. Myers, FL) had a RBI double in the seventh and also scored his team's first run in the fifth on an error.
