Western New England takes 21-6 decision over Mitchell in ECAC Division III semifinals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
- Freshman midfielder Sean Lawton (Abington, MA) scored four goals and had an assist as No. 20 Western New England rolled to a 21-6 victory over Mitchell in a semifinal round game of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Saturday night (May 14).

The Golden Bears (15-5) will meet Hartwick (10-8) at 1:00 p.m. Sunday (May 15) in the title contest. The Hawks defeated Marywood (Pa.) 8-6 in the other semifinal contest.

Mitchell took a 2-0 lead midway through the first period on goals by junior attacker Adam Grillo (Waterford, CT) and freshman attacker Erik Vasquez (Oceanside, CA).

Western New England poured in seven goals in the final six minutes to take a 7-3 lead after the opening quarter. Junior attacker Joe O'Keefe (Branford, CT) played a key role with a pair of goals and assist. Freshman attacker Adam Knapton (Canandaigua, NY) scored with 3.3 seconds left in the quarter.

Knapton also tallied the first goal of the second period while junior attacker Andrew Mariani (East Brunswick, NJ) had an assist and goal with six seconds remaining as the Golden Bears outscored the Mariners by a 5-0 margin to take a 12-3 lead at half-time.

Western New England then scored six more times in the third quarter with junior midfielder Chris D'Angelo (Suffield, CT) firing home a shot as time expired for a commanding 18-3 advantage.

The Golden Bears scored 14 unanswered goals at one point and kept Mitchell off the board for 38 minutes, 31 seconds.

Knapton finished with three goals while O'Keefe and sophomore attacker Corrigan Harreys (Essex, CT) each contributed two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Anthony Monfredo (West Islip, NY) and freshman attacker Justin McKinney (Niskayuna, NY) each scored twice.

Freshman midfielder Demetre Lyras (Rocky Point, NY) and freshman attacker Shane Sullivan (Quaker Hill, CT) both tallied a pair of goals for the Mariners who end their season with a 9-4 record.

Sophomore midfielder Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY) scored what proved to be the winning goal with 3:36 remaining as Hartwick rallied for an 8-6 victory over Marywood (PA) in a semifinal round game of the ECAC Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Saturday (May 14).

Shields' goal broke a 6-6 tie and sophomore attacker Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY) added an insurance goal with 1:41 left as the Hawks advanced to the title game Sunday against the winner of the Western New England/Mitchell contest.

Hartwick (10-8) led 3-2 after the opening period before the Pacers scored three times in the second quarter to take a 5-3 advantage at the break. The Hawks answered with three goals in the third stanza to lead by one entering the final period.

Marywood senior attacker William Roerden (Warwick, NY) tied the game just 2:45 into the fourth quarter and the game remained tied until Shields' finally broke through with his winning shot.

Senior midfielder Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY) led Hartwick with two goals while freshman attacker Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY) added a goal and assist. Sophomore defender Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY) contributed five ground balls. Freshman goalie Nick Triano (North Andover, MA) compiled seven saves.

Roerden and freshman attacker Riley Dobel (Oak Bluffs, MA) each finished with a goal and assist for Marywood. Senior midfielder George Downey IV (Palmyra, PA) picked-up five ground balls. Senior goalie Jesse Habich (Broomall, PA) had a solid effort making 14 saves.

Hartwick had a slight advantage in both shots (37-32) and ground balls (25-23).

Marywood ends its season with an 11-7 record.
