SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England men's soccer team used a balanced scoring attack to post a 3-1 victory over UMass Dartmouth in the 2011 season opener on Thursday (Sept. 1) afternoon at Suprenant Field.
Sophomore forward
Jake Bartnik (East Longmeadow, MA) opened the scoring in the 33rd minute for the Golden Bears as he buried a shot from across the box in the bottom right corner. He was assisted by senior midfielder
Eric Marcelino (Farmington, CT).
WNE took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break, with the Corsairs striking early in the second to level the score on a strike from freshman forward
Elton Borges (Praia, Cape Verde) at 46:20.
Senior midfielder
Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, NY) headed home a cross from Marcelino to put WNE up 2-1 in the 60th minute.
The Golden Bears added an insurance tally as sophomore forward
Ryan Williams (Brewster, NY) slotted home a fast break opportunity in the 75th minute to seal the victory.
WNE held a 21-11 advantage in shots, with a 9-5 edge in shots on target.
Junior goalkeeper
Nick Starr (Somers, CT) picked up the win in net, making four saves for the home side.
Junior goalie
Jon Doucette (Boxford, MA) made six stops in the loss.
Western New England returns to action in the Springfield College Tournament, facing Westfield State on Saturday (Sept. 3) at 2:15 p.m.
