Springfield tops city-rival Western New England 1-0 with overtime goal

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman midfielder Zach Dutter (Dallas, PA) notched the game-winning goal with 57 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lift Springfield to a 1-0 victory over Western New England in the championship match of the Springfield College Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 4) afternoon at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.

Dutter scored the winner on a half-volley that was crossed in from the left side by sophomore midfielder Drew Vanasse (Concord, MA).

Springfield improves to 2-0 on the season, while Western New England slips to 2-1. This marked the first time the Pride have beaten the Golden Bears since 2002.

Western New England held a slight edge (11-9) in shots in the match, however four of Springfield's attempts came during the overtime session.

Freshman goalkeeper Brett Bascom (New London, NH) and sophomore goalie Chris Walton (Cromwell, CT) combined to make five saves in the win.

Junior goalkeeper Nick Starr (Somers, CT) made three saves for the Golden Bears.

Western New England returns to action on Wednesday (Sept. 7) to host Wheaton (Mass.) at 4:00 p.m.
