SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University men's soccer team ended the regular season at home on a high note Tuesday at Suprenant Field, defeating Gordon College by a score of 3-0 in the last Commonwealth Coast Conference match for both schools. The Golden Bears finished with a conference record of 4-3-2, and 9-7-3 overall, while the Fighting Scots now stand at 5-11-1 overall and 4-5 in the CCC.
The first thirty minutes of the game were tightly contested, with strong defensive play and minimal scoring opportunities on both sides. That changed in the 33rd minute when a corner kick by
Ryan Williams was headed into the back of the net by
Zachary Coopee, giving the Golden Bears a 1-0 advantage.
Williams proved to be the offensive catalyst all afternoon for Western New England, recording points on each of the Golden Bears goals. The junior was able to score a goal of his own moments into the second half, when he received a beautiful pass in stride from
Shawn DaCruz, raced past his defender, and then beat the Gordon goalkeeper to put Western New England up 2-0 just 43 seconds in.
The Golden Bears added some insurance to their lead five minutes later on a goal by
Colin Macdonald, his fourth of the season, as Williams notched his fourth point in the game.
Gordon's best scoring opportunity came in the second half on a hard, low shot off the right post. Overall, the Golden Bears outshot Gordon 11-7, including 6-3 on goal.
This was potentially the last home game for seniors
Nick Starr,
Bobby Jameson and DaCruz (
Mike Wysocki is a senior academically and has another year of eligibility.), who will lead the team into the CCC tournament, which begins this Saturday. Western New England will learn its destination for the tournament after tomorrow's CCC contest between Endicott and Wentworth.
