Hayes Powers Golden Bears Past Wheelock

Box Score BOSTON--Freshman Chelsea Hayes netted two goals and junior Sarah Race added a goal and an assist to pace Western New England University to a 4-1 victory Thursday over Wheelock in non-conference field hockey action. The visiting Golden Bears improve to 4-7 on the season, while the Wildcats are winless at 0-6.

Western New England got off to a quick start as Race fed Hayes' second goal of the season just 3 minutes and 17 seconds into the game. Just 7:12 later, senior Caitlin Foster scored her team-leading seventh tally on a short cross from senior defender Shelby Van Huysen, as the Golden Bears took a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Hayes scored her second goal of the night in the 40th minute and Race sealed the win with an unassisted goal six minutes later.

Besides the scoreboard, Western New England also dominated in shots (28 to 7) and penalty corners (16 to 5).

WNE senior goalie Kaitlyn Hall, who ended up with three saves, lost her shutout bid in the 61st minute when Despina Savvoulides followed up on a shot by Taylor Rogers and put the rebound in the back of the cage.

Michelle Greene stopped 11 shots for the Wildcats.
