QUINCY, Mass.--The Western New England University women's tennis team concluded its regular season on Friday by defeating host Eastern Nazarene, 6-1, in a darkness-shortened Commonwealth Coast Conference match. As a result, the Golden Bears (4-7 overall, 3-5 CCC) are a step closer to securing a spot in next week's conference tournament. If Gordon loses to second-place Endicott at home tomorrow, then that would eliminate the Fighting Scots from the postseason race. But a win over the Gulls would clinch the sixth and final playoff spot for Gordon, because it holds the tiebreaker over the Golden Bears.
But for tonight, Western New England entered singles play with a 2-1 lead after doubles victories at No. 2 and 3.
Alysha Lesieur and
Gillian Adams defeated the Samantha Jones/Kathryn McLaughlin team, 8-6, and
Juliette Cormier and
Kelly Byrnes easily dispatched Tressa Burrello/Monica Gonzalez, 8-1.
The Golden Bears dominated the singles competition. No. 1
Linda Mustafa dropped the first set to Sharon Lemire, 6-1, but came back in the next two by identical scores of 6-3, 6-3. No. 2 Lesieur, No. 3
Lindsey Brudvig, and No. 6 Byrnes all emerged with wins in straight sets.
The match was suspended during Nos. 4 and 5 singles action due to darkness.
Eastern Nazarene falls to 2-9 overall and 0-7 in Commonwealth Coast play.
