SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder
Beau Wood (Sherwood Forest, MD) scored five goals to lead the second-ranked Tufts men's lacrosse team to a 13-9 victory over No. 19 Western New England in a non-conference game Sunday (Mar. 25).
Senior midfielder
Kevin McCormick (Laytonsville, MD) added three goals and an assist as the Jumbos improved their record to 5-1. Senior midfielder
Nick Rhoads (McLean, VA) contributed to the victory by winning 20-of-25 face-offs and compiling 13 ground balls.
Freshman attacker
Cole Bailey (Millersville, MD) chipped-in with a goal, two assists, and four ground balls while senior attacker
Jordan Korinis (Ridgewood, NJ) dished out three assists. Senior midfielder Ben Saperstein (Hewlett, NY) had a pair of goals.
Junior midfielder
Sam Diss (Ridgewood, NJ) gave the visitors a quick lead by scoring just 12 seconds into the game before the Golden Bears came back to take a 2-1 lead after the opening period on goals by junior midfielders
Corey Johnson (Maybrook, NY) and
James Reardon (Longmeadow, MA).
Western New England (3-2) took it largest lead at 5-3 when senior midfielder
Patrick White (Milton, MA) scored with 3:26 remaining in the second quarter.
Tufts then netted three goals in the final 1:20 with an extra-man shot by freshman attacker
Chris Schoenhut (Mill Neck, NY) with five seconds left giving the Jumbos a 6-4 lead at the half.
McCormick and Wood fired in goals in the opening 4:33 of the third period to extend the lead to 8-5. Senior midfielder
Nick Jez (Somers, CT) scored a man-up goal at 6:11 to cut the margin to two before Tufts scored the last four goals of the period for a12-6 advantage.
Western New England tallied the first two goals of the fourth period following shots by sophomore attacker
Owen Caruso (Port Washington, NY) and a beautiful behind-the-back effort by White to get within 12-8 with 11:53 to play.
Wood, however, converted a man-up attempt with 7:32 remaining to make it a five-goal game and the Golden Bears couldn't catch up.
Both goalies came up with several outstanding plays with sophomore
Patton Watkins (Chattanooga, TN) finishing with 15 saves for Tufts and senior
Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) stopping 20 shots for Western New England.
Reardon and Jez each finished with a goal and assist while sophomore long stick midfielder
Jack Liacos (Beverly, MA) picked-up five ground balls.
Tufts held a 47-41 edge in shots, including a big 15-3 advantage in the pivotal third quarter.
