NEWPORT, R.I. – The Western New England baseball team opened its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) season with a 12-4, 10-0 doubleheader sweep over Salve Regina Monday (Mar. 26) at windy and chilly Reynolds Field.
The Golden Bears improved their record to 7-6 while the Seahawks drop to 6-10 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Game 1 – Western New England 12, Salve Regina 4
Western New England banged out nine hits and took advantage of 11 walks in taking the opener. WNE scored seven runs in the fourth to erase a 1-0 deficit.
Senior designated hitter
Mike Taylor (Andover, MA) singled, doubled, scored twice, and knocked in three runs.
Sophomore center fielder
Jeff Schult (Wappingers Falls, NY) added a pair of singles, runs, and RBI. Sophomore first baseman
Steve Ambrosino (Laurel Hollow, NY) also singled twice, scored once, and had a run-batted-in.
Junior right fielder
Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) had a two-run single in the fourth inning and finished with three RBI.
Junior
Jeff Richardson (Simsbury, CT) went the first five innings to improve e to 2-1. He gave up six hits with two runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.
SRU sophomore shortstop
Daniel Donahue (Westbury, NY) went 4-for-5 with a run and two RBI.
Game 2 – Western New England 10, Salve Regina 0
Freshman
Trevor Breton (Enfield, CT) tossed a complete game two-hitter for his first collegiate shutout. He fanned four and walked three in raising his record to 2-1.
The Golden Bears started strong by scoring two runs in the first, four in the second, and two more in the third for an early 8-0 advantage.
Senior catcher
Tyler Issadore (Hingham, MA) had two singles, a double, and scored two runs.
Junior left fielder
Taylor Perun (Plainville, CT) chipped-in with a three-run double in the second.
Ambrosino reached base four times with two singles and walks, and score twice. Schult also collected two hits to help pace the 14-hit attack.
Junior third baseman
Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) had five walks and a single in the two games.
