Western New England rolls to doubleheader sweep over visiting Nichols in CCC action

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –The Western New England baseball team opened its home season by exploding for 30 runs and 31 hits in sweeping a doubleheader over Nichols by the scores of 12-1 and 18-1 Saturday afternoon (Mar. 31) at chilly Trelease Memorial Park.

The Golden Bears ran their winning streak to six games and improved their record to 11-6 with the victories. WNE also is undefeated in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) with a 4-0 mark. Nichols falls to 1-12 and 0-6 in the conference.

Game 1 – Western New England 12, Nichols 1

Freshman Trevor Breton (Enfield, CT) was impressive giving up just two hits and an unearned run in six innings. He walked only one and struck out seven in raising his record to 3-1.

Junior second baseman Tim Clark (West Springfield, MA) and sophomore first baseman Steve Ambrosino (Laurel Hollow, NY) each went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Ambrosino also knocked in two runs while Clark had a RBI. Junior third baseman Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) contributed two hits, a run scored, and a pair of RBI.

Western New England scored four times in the second inning and put the game away with an eight-run fourth-inning.

Nichols scored its only run when sophomore center fielder Nick Shaw (Plymouth, MA) walked to lead off the third inning, senior designated hitter Richie Burke (Newburyport, MA) singled with both runners moving up a base on an error, and Shaw scoring on a RBI ground-out by freshman right fielder Evan Thompson (Longmeadow, MA).

Game 2 – Western New England 18, Nichols 1

The Golden Bears sent 16 batters to the plate in the first inning scoring 11 times with the big hits a pair of three-run homers by  junior Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY) and Ambrosino.

Junior catcher Tom Booth (Milford, CT) led the 20-hit attack with three singles, two runs scored, and RBI.

Also chipping in with two hits were Clark (who was 5-for-6 for the day), junior left fielder Taylor Perun (Plainville, CT), sophomore left fielder Ryan Govoni (Southington, CT), and freshman third baseman Chris Murphy (Acton, MA).

Senior Mark DiTommaso (Hebron, CT) went the first three innings and gained the victory, moving his record to 2-0. He allowed three hits, no runs, and walked one with three strikeouts.

Nichols junior shortstop Kyle Russell (West Yarmouth, MA) had two of the team's seven hits. The Bison scored its run in the seventh on two-out single by Burke.
