SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior
Mike Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) pitched six strong innings and Western New England banged out 17 hits in posting a 14-1 victory over Keene State in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 11) in a battle of two of the top teams in the region at Trelease Park.
The Golden Bears improve their record to 16-8 while the Owls drop to 18-7. Keene State entered the game having won 11 of its last 12 contests.
The bottom half of the WNE lineup (six through eight) came through with an impressive showing as junior designated hitter
Taylor Perun (Plainville, CT), junior shortstop
Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY), and senior catcher
Tyler Issadore (Hingham, MA) each collected three hits while combining for eight RBI and five runs scored.
Western New England and Keene State were tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth when the Golden Bears scored four runs when Perun knocked in a pair of runs with a single and Issadore had a two-run double.
Junior third baseman
Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) and junior left fielder
Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) each contributed two hits. Anthonis also walked and scored three runs.
Western New England added a pair of runs in the seventh and seven more in the eight to break the game open.
Lospinuso gave up just five hits with a walk and two strikeouts to improve his record to 2-1. The run scored against him was unearned.
Senior center fielder
Kyle Morrill (Auburn, NH) had two of the Owls' seven hits.
Senior right fielder
Erik Bergstrom (Enfield, CT) walked and had a RBI single in the fifth that tied the game.
Junior pitcher
John Coughlin (Litchfield, NH) lasted only five-and-two-third innings in suffering his first loss in three decisions. He gave up seven hits and five runs (four earned) with a walk and two strikeouts.
