Western New England can't hold early lead in dropping 17-10 conference contest at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine  – Freshman midfielder Gina Newsome (Danbury, CT) led a balance attack with four goals and two assists as the University of New England women's lacrosse team posted a 17-10 victory over Western New England Saturday (Apr. 14) at Big Blue Turf.

The Nor'easters are now 11-2 following their school-record ninth consecutive win and remain undefeated in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) at 5-0.

Senior attacker Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, NH) contributed three goals and two assists. Junior midfielders Cara Cole (Norwood, MA) and Emily Lodge (Lyman, ME) both scored three goals. Cole also had an assist.

Western New England (5-10, 2-4 CCC) held the upper hand for the first part of the opening half using two goals by senior midfielder Katie Toomy (Northborough, MA) to take a 4-2 lead at the 16:57 mark.

Newsome then tallied a free position goal 56 seconds later and scored again with 7:18 left in the half as the hosts ran off six unanswered goals for an 8-4 halftime advantage.

Senior midfielder Jesalyn Dvorak (Windsor, CT) gave UNE a 9-4 lead with a goal 50 seconds into the second half.

Western New England senior midfielder Liz McRoberts (Bourne, MA) cut the margin to four with a goal with 25:53 to play.

The Nor'easters then scored seven straight times for a 16-5 lead before the Golden Bears notched five goals in a row over a three-minute stretch late in the game.

Toomy had a fine all-round performance with four goals and two assists along with six draw controls. She also had two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

McRoberts finished with two goals while sophomore midfielder Kelsey Sherman (Buchanan, NY) notched a goal with two assists.

Senior midfielder Megan Doyle (Putnam Valley, NY), sophomore defender Julia Bernas (Framingham, MA), and freshman attacker Sarah Stevens (Stratford, CT) each had a goal and assist.

Sophomore goalie Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, ME) compiled 13 saves for UNE. Freshman Emily Castleman (Wilbraham, MA) stopped 12 shots for Western New England.
