Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Courtney Scott scored three goals to power visiting Gordon to a 5-1 field hockey win over Western New England on Wednesday evening at Golden Bear Stadium in a game that was closer than the final score appeared. The Fighting Scots improve to 11-4 overall and move into sole possession of second place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference standings at 6-2, while the Golden Bears slip to 2-12 and 1-7 in the CCC.
Trailing 1-0, Western New England tied it in the 15th minute on a goal by
Alissa Doiron from
Jaynie Mueller. After severe knee injuries limited her to four games and no points over the previous three seasons, the senior Doiron has registered three goals in 13 contests this fall. ÂÂ
The 1-1 score remained that way until the 24th minute when Scott took advantage of a WNE turnover 20 yards from the cage and came in alone on goalie
Jessica Hale, putting the Scots up to stay. She added her third of the first half in the 33rd minute as Gordon led 3-1 at the intermission.
Mueller led all players with eight shots and five on target.
Gordon had a slim 13 to 11 shots advantage, including an 11-8 shots on goal margin. Western New England enjoyed a wide margin in penalty corners at 9-1.
The Scots' Megan Willeman notched her first goal of the season on a feed from Brittany Hawkins, and the Golden Bears held Gordon off the scoreboard for the final 16 minutes and 39 seconds.
Hale finished with six saves and Anna Bury and Shannon Hicks combined for seven, with the starter Bury earning the win (8-4).
Western New England will have its home finale on Senior Day against CCC leader
University of New England on Saturday, beginning at 6 p.m.
