Penalty Kick Goal Lifts Western New England to 1-0 Shutout at Eastern Nazarene

Box Score QUINCY, Mass.--Senior Ryan Williams scored in the 50th minute on a penalty kick and the Western New England men's soccer team made that stand up in a 1-0 victory at Eastern Nazarene on Saturday afternoon on the Lions' homecoming weekend at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The victory propels the visiting Golden Bears to 11-3-2 overall, extending an unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1), and 5-1-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference while the Lions drop to 2-12 on the season and remain winless at 0-6 in league play.

The two squads entered the midway point leveled at 0-0. Western New England registered eight shots in the opening 45 minutes of action while Eastern Nazarene mustered a pair of first-half shots. The Golden Bears held a 6-1 margin in corner kicks earned in the first frame.

Williams now has four goals along with a career-high seven assists for a second-team-leading 15 points this fall. He led the team today with five shots, three on target.

The Golden Bears finished the game with a 19-4 gap in total shots including a 4-0 edge in shots on frame and a 9-2 advantage in corners.

Goalie Jake Johnson stopped six shots to keep Eastern Nazarene within striking distance. Domenick Villano picked up his seventh shutout of the season in goal for the Golden Bears, who suffocated the ENC offense by allowing no shots on goal. The stout WNE defense was headed up by starters Kevin Parma, Jon Axton, Colin Macdonald and Chris Bruton.

Scott Hansen paced the Lions with two shots in the match while Luke Wooster and Will Campbell each recorded one.

Up next, the Lions remain at home as they welcome Wentworth to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday for a critical conference match. Western New England, meanwhile, begins a season-ending three-game homestand against CCC opponent Salve Regina that afternoon at 3 p.m.
