Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.--The Western New England University women's soccer team was eliminated from the 2013 Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Tournament after Saturday's 2-0 quarterfinal loss to nationally No. 19-ranked Roger Williams University at Bayside Field. The visiting Golden Bears, who are seeded seventh, end their season at 9-7-4 overall. The #2-seeded Hawks improve to 17-2-2 and will face #3 Gordon in the CCC semifinals after edging Eastern Nazarene 2-1 in overtime today.
After a scoreless first half, RWU finally broke through in the 66th minute when Katie Lydon was taken down in the box, earning her a penalty kick. Lydon was able to fire the shot into the right corner of the net to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks came out aggressive early on, with Mariah Kaiser nearly giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute after the opening kickoff. She was able to grab a contested ball in the box away from a Golden Bear defender and put a shot up that just sailed over the net.
In the 15th minute, a Hawk cross into the box slipped through Golden Bear keeper
Briana Kubik's hands. Western New England caught a break when the Hawks could not get a clean shot off before WNE's defense was able to clear the ball.
Western New England struggled offensively in the first half due to a stout Roger Williams defense. Freshmen
Brionna Voight and
Katelyn Cummings were the only players to put up shots for WNE, but both had their attempts turned away by Hawk keeper Stephanie Jaques.
The second half began much like the first, with RWU staying on the attack. In the 58th minute, Kristen Casey served up a nice corner kick to Kristen Tetreault who was able to send a header to the right side. Kubik, however, was able to make a great diving stop on the shot to keep the game scoreless.
The Golden Bears put a scare into the Hawks in the 85th minute when Cummings put up a free kick that sailed over Jaques' head and careened off the crossbar.
Becca Mercieri followed up five seconds later with a shot that just went over the net.
The Hawks were able to add an insurance goal in the closing minutes, with Hannah Noel's 12th of the season in the 88th.
Roger Williams held decided advantages in shots at 25-8 and corner kicks at 12-2. Cummings tried to spark the WNE offense with a team-high three shots.
Kubik had five saves in the loss while Jaques had three stops.
With over 70 percent of the team comprised by freshmen and sophomores, the Golden Bears are positioned for future success after improving on their 8-11-1 mark in 2012. Five of WNE's seven losses this fall have been by two goals or less.
