Golden Bears Edge Amherst, 7-5, behind Two Hits Apiece from Steve Ambrosino, Mike Rubino

Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla.--Junior Steve Ambrosino and senior Mike Rubino each had two hits to help lead Western New England to a 7-5 non-conference baseball victory Saturday evening over Amherst on the second day of the Russ Matt Invitational here at Lake Myrtle Park. The nationally No. 15-ranked Golden Bears move to 4-1 on the season while the Lord Jeffs were playing in their 2013 opener.

Junior right-hander Brendan Nugent pitched six solid innings to get the win, scattering eight hits, striking out four batters and allowing two runs. Sophomore Nick Salerno worked a scoreless ninth to record his first career save at the collegiate level.

"For the second straight day, despite not playing our best, we found a way to hang on in the end," Western New England coach Matt LaBranche said. "(Sophomore Jason) Haddy and Salerno were big out of the pen. If those guys continue to develop, we should be very tough."

The Golden Bears built a 6-0 lead through four innings before Amherst scored a run in the top of the fifth.

Ambrosino rapped a pair of triples, including one in the fourth to spark a three-run frame. Rubino capped it with two runs batted in on a single. Senior co-captain Tim Clark added two RBI on a single in the first and a bases-loaded walk in the third.
