Visiting Brandeis Edges #20/29 Baseball in Non-Conference Action to Begin Home Slate

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University baseball team dropped its 2013 home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Trelease Park to visiting non-conference foe Brandeis, 2-1, despite a strong outing from starting pitcher Trevor Breton. Ranked 20th by d3baseball.com and No. 29 in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper coaches' poll, the Golden Bears' record falls to 6-5, while the Judges improve to 5-10.

Breton nearly pitched a complete game, getting one out in the ninth inning before being replaced by fellow sophomore Jason Haddy. Breton (1-1) pitched well enough to earn the victory, striking out a season-high seven batters and allowing
only two earned runs.

But, the Western New England offense was stymied by Brandeis' Dylan Britton (6-1/3, 6 hits, 0 earned runs) and Kyle Brenner (2-2/3, 0 earned runs). Britton got the win while Brenner picked up the save.

The Golden Bears were able to get ahead early by manufacturing a run in the bottom of the first inning. Centerfielder
Jeff Schult led off the game with a single, stole second base, advanced to third on a single by second baseman Tim Clark, and finally scored on an error by Brandeis second baseman Tom McCarthy.

The Judges trailed 1-0 until the fourth inning, when McCarthy was able to atone for his error by doubling and then scoring on a single by third baseman Kevin Barry. The game remained tied until the top of the seventh, when Brandeis took a 2-1 lead on a fielding error which allowed Max Hart (2-for-4) to score the eventual game-winning run.

Matt Anthonis, Mike Rubino and Steve Buckley had Western New England's other three hits--all singles.

The Golden Bears will be back in action tomorrow hosting Springfield College in non-conference action at 3:30 p.m. Brandeis is off until Friday, when it plays at Amherst College at 3:30.
