SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Sophomore
Kaitlynn Stevens led Western New England with four goals and sophomore goalie
Emily Castleman recorded a season-best 12 saves to propel the Golden Bears to a comeback 16-11 win Saturday over visiting Castleton State in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Golden Bear Stadium. The Golden Bears remain undefeated in four home starts to improve to 6-3 on the season, while the Spartans slip to 1-7 overall.
Amanda Flodstrom paced Castleton with four goals while Sarah Clark came off the bench to add two goals and an assist; Brandi Whittemore chipped in a goal and two assists.
Sophomore tri-captain
Jessica Scannapieco matched Stevens with four points, including a hat-trick. Graduate student
Megan Doyle (3 goals), freshman
Taylor Scialdone (1 goal, 2 assists) and junior tri-captain
Kelsey Sherman (2 goals, 1 assist) had three points each.
After Scannapieco scored a man-up goal on a feed from freshman
Bethany Peters 2 minutes and 3 seconds into the contest, Castleton reeled off five consecutive unassisted tallies from five different goal scorers to take a 5-1 lead with 14:31 left in the first half.
But Western New England scored five of the next six goals to forge at 6-6 tie at halftime. Scannapieco found the back of the net twice on that Golden Bears run.
The second half began much the same way WNE ended the first...on a roll. Freshman
Kaleigh Cannon registered just her third career goal with 2:36 elapsed to ignite a three-goal span for a 9-6 cushion, as the Golden Bears would never relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
The Spartans fought back to close within a goal a couple times, 9-8 at the 19:56 mark and 10-9 at 17:42, but the Golden Bears sealed the victory by scoring four times in an 8-minute span late.
Castleman had six saves in each half, as well as four ground balls on the day. Her opponent, Meghan Els, also totaled 12 stops.
Western New England also held advantages in shots (37-30), shots on goal (28-23), ground balls (33-29) and draw controls (17-12).
Scannapieco (6) and Doyle (5) combined for 11 draw controls. Freshman
Tori Cirocco led WNE with five ground balls, followed by Doyle, Scialdone and Scannapieco with four each.
Cori Healy had a solid day heading up the Spartans' defense with five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
