Box Score
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Megan Doyle scored her third goal of the game with 2 minutes and 30 seconds remaining to lift Western New England to a 15-14 comeback victory Thursday over visiting Mount Holyoke in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Golden Bear Stadium. The Golden Bears are 2-0 for the first time since 2002, while the Lyons are 2-1 on the season.
Sophomores
Jessica Scannapieco (7 points) and
Kaitlynn Stevens (6 points) scored five goals apiece for the Golden Bears.
Julia Bell (7 points) led Mount Holyoke with a game-high six goals to go along with four draw controls, and Kirsten Kilburn added three goals, two assists, six ground balls and six draw controls.
Western New England took an 8-5 lead going into the intermission despite getting outshot 17 to 12. Things changed in the second half when the Lyons used a stronger possession game and the weather became worse with driving snow showers, making for slippery conditions on the field.
Bell gave Mount Holyoke its first lead of the afternoon, 9-8, at the 24:21 mark, taking a feed from Catherine Ryan. Bell scored two more goals to eventually give MHC its biggest advantage at 13-10 with 13:12 to go.
But Scannapieco started a four-goal run over a 4:05 span with her eighth of the season at 12:23 to reclaim the WNE lead at 14-13.
Bell knotted the score one last time, teaming up again with Ryan, 29 seconds after a WNE unassisted goal by freshman
Taylor Scialdone. Then she had a chance to give MHC a potential game-ending lead but her shot went wide of the cage with 3:20 to go.
On Western New England's ensuing possession,
Kaleigh Cannon got a good look on the cage but her shot went high. The Golden Bears maintained control as Scannapieco worked behind the goal and then found a cutting Doyle in the front for the game-winner.
The Mount Holyoke bench called timeout to set up a play before earning the ensuing draw control. The Lyons committed three turnovers in each of their final possessions.
For the game, Mount Holyoke held an advantage in key statistical categories--shots (33-24), ground balls (20-15) and draw controls (18-13)--except for the most important tally...on the scoreboard.
