SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Junior leadoff hitter
Jeff Schult went 5-for-7 with two runs batted in on the afternoon to help host Western New England to a sweep of Wentworth, 7-3 and 10-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Pat Ricci Field at Trelease Park on Saturday. The Golden Bears improve to 17-7 overall and 7-1 in the CCC, while the Leopards sink to 11-11 and 2-8 in the conference.
In the first game, senior
Mike Rubino delivered a key three-run double to left field that turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Rubino finished the game with two hits and a walk.
Schult went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
After two shaky innings to start the game in which he surrendered three runs on five hits, sophomore right-handed pitcher
Trevor Breton settled down to shut down the Leopards the rest of the way--keeping them off the scoreboard on three hits. Breton ended up with a complete-game victory (3-1) with four strikeouts and only one unearned run allowed.
"I was very pleased with our complete level in this game. We showed a little grit (after) erasing a three-run deficit (early)," Western New England coach Matt LaBranche said. "Trevor really hung in there, and we got a clutch hit from our best hitter in Rubino."
In the nightcap, Western New England darted out to a 5-0 lead in the opening frame and never looked back. The Golden Bears had a pair of sacrifice flies to highlight the inning.
Senior
Kyle McKelvey led WNE offensively with a 2-for-3, 4-RBI performance that included a three-run double to right center field in the fourth. Schult had three hits and senior co-captain
Matt Anthonis, junior
Steve Ambrosino contributed two apiece as part of the team's 11 in the contest.
In addition, senior catcher
Tom Booth connected for his first career home run to back the pitching performance of his battery mate, sophomore
Nick Salerno. Salerno had seven strikeouts and allowed just two hits in six innings of work. Junior
Ryan Skelly tossed a scoreless seventh, with two strikeouts, to close it.
"It was really nice to finally break out with the bats early in a game and get some breathing room," said LaBranche. "Salerno was obviously outstanding in his first collegiate start. He is pitching with a ton of confidence."
