MILTON, Mass.--Junior
Jeff Schult went 5-for-9 with three runs batted in on the afternoon in the leadoff spot, and sophomore
Steve Buckley hammered a three-run blast to account for the margin of victory in game two, as Western New England claimed a 14-5 and 6-3 sweep at Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference baseball action on Sunday. The Golden Bears improve to 19-7 overall and 9-1 in the CCC standings, while the Colonels fall to 5-13-2 and 3-5 in the conference.
In the opener, Schult also stole three bases to go along with a season-high four hits to lead the Golden Bears' 14-hit attack. Seniors
Mike Rubino,
Kyle McKelvey and
Taylor Perun all chipped in with two hits, as Rubino and McKelvey tacked on two RBI each.
Western New England scored all the runs they would need in the top of the second inning when senior co-captain
Tim Clark doubled home a run to spark a seven-run frame. The Golden Bears made it 10-0 in the next frame before the Colonels got three of their own in their half of the third.
"We had a very good team hitting approach in this game. Schult and (Matt) Anthonis were good by setting the table and the middle of the order did their job," said Western New England coach Matt LaBranche said. "We needed to keep the pressure on the entire game because Curry swung the bats real well."
Curry rapped 13 hits but couldn't make them count like WNE did. The Colonels left six runners on base while the Golden Bears had seven. The hosts also committed three errors that led to seven of WNE's 14 runs being unearned.
Senior
Mike Lospinuso went the distance to improve to 5-1 on the season, striking out three while walking none. Of the 13 hits he allowed, only one went for extra bases.
In the second game, Buckley mashed a three-run homer to left field to highlight four runs in the first inning. It was his second in a week to go along with the grand slam he hit in Wednesday's 7-6 victory at Keene State.
Junior starting pitcher
Brendan Nugent (5-1) got all the run support he would need on Buckley's swing, as he allowed three runs and seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Senior
Kevin Jefferis got the final four outs to pick up his third save.
Junior
Steve Ambrosino, Rubino and Perun had three hits apiece, as both teams had nine total.
"I'm very pleased with the way we finished off the weekend. Curry battled hard the whole way so we had to really earn it the last couple of innings," LaBranche said. "Schult and Anthonis were pests again at the top of the lineup, and Rubino and Buck(ley) had big hits.
"Nug(ent) did a good job on short rest and Kev(in Jefferis) battled hard through some early control problems to nail down the save. It was just a real gritty win."
